Creating an Indoor Herb Box

Having fresh herbs on hand is possible at any time of year.An indoor herb box filled with either culinary or medicinal herbs can bring joy to the entire family. In addition, an indoor herb garden is a wonderful way to overwinter many of your tender perennials. My window box measures approximately 20 inches long, six inches wide and six inches deep, but whatever size fits your space is fine. Be sure to have several drainage holes and to use good quality potting soil.Place the box in a sunny spot, water when the herbs are dry and ferttilize with an organic fish emulsion once a month. In additon, keep the plants trimmed so that they will remain compact-besides you should be using them! Turn the box around every couple of weeks to ensure even light and growth. Some of my favorite window box themes are:

The Herbal Tea Box with Rose Scented Geranium, Peppermint, Rosemary, Anise Hyssop & Lemon Balm.

The Remedies Box with Lavender, Sage, Spearmint, Feverfew, Catnip and Calendula.

The Culinary Box with Parsley, Oregano, Sage, Thyme, Chives, Lemon Thyme & Basil.

The Aromatherapy Box with Lavender, Rosemary, Peppermint, Orange Scented Geranium & Lemon Verbena.

Your special indoor garden is guaranteed to provide you with winter long pleasure. Before you know it the flowers will be blooming, the birds will be chirping and spring will be upon us! Happy gardening!
